i'm a nerd

I love Christopher Guest and his movies; some might call me obsessed. That's why it was such a thrill for me when I found out A Mighty Wind was coming to San Francisco.

The fact that the actors would all get together and do a concert was almost unbelievable. (In fact, I refused to fully believe it until it was actually happening, for fear of heartbreak.) Like Spinal Tap, only with way more people. Parker Posey! Jane Lynch! Catherine O'Hara! Eugene Levy! Michael McKean! Some of my favorite comedians of all time.

Ian was the one who first told me this was happening, and while I was still on the phone with him, I bought the tickets online. Thirty seconds after the words were out of his mouth, I had my tickets. Are you kidding me? There was no way I was going to miss this!

It was so fabulous. We were right up in the front, four people back from the stage, at most. They did all their songs from the soundtrack. Lyrically they are so incredibly stupid, and yet musically they are so fun and catchy. I got completely caught up in the moment during "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow." They kissed twice!

It was as if I had stepped into my favorite movie, and how often does that happen in your life?

Bob Balaban was there to introduce all the acts, as Jonathan Steinbloom. And the groups themselves did so much funny patter between songs. (Laurie Boner on her acting name, Misty Sunset: "That also happens to be the name of my childhood pet, plus the street where I grew up. What are the odds of that?") Eugene Levy was particularly funny as Mitch, moving a table just so and freaking out when the audience made noise. (Audience member: "Woo!" Mitch: "Did you just make that up? It's pretty good.")

Christopher Guest did a great bit where he was just sort of random and forgetful. Harry Shearer was in drag. And Jennifer Coolidge's character did this weird "twist" type dance during the finale that was just priceless. She also announced that she was pregnant, and the baby might be Jonathan Steinbloom's. Which made Bob Balaban crack up, so I don't think it was planned. I know I'm a huge nerd, but it was all so funny, so amazing to be there in person. I had such a fabulous time.

I did a lot of other things this weekend too. Saturday was very rainy, and therefore the perfect day to go see some movies. It's such a treat for me to be able to go to the movies again! In fact I saw two: Elf and the third Matrix, which was not my fault, because Jenfu made me do it.

As a big Will Ferrell fan, I liked Elf a lot. I even cried at the end, much to my chagrin. I am such a sucker. Matrix made me cry too, but only because it was so terribly bad. (Fortunately it was one of those bad movies that you can laugh your way through. Also, since when has Jada Pinkett-Smith been so hot? She was smoking hot in this movie. Redeeming quality.)

Then I made Foo watch some of The Office with me, which I can't stop quoting. There's this one moment where David Brent says "racial" that kills me every single time. It's like the funniest thing ever to me. If you've seen the episode, you might know what I'm talking about. He's singing the Spaceman song? During the Training Day episode? Just me then? Okay.

The other excitement of the weekend was that I took a nap. I should have spent Sunday cleaning my house or something productive like that, but the bed looked so comfy that I was powerless to resist its lure. I know that five hours of sleep is not exactly a "nap" in the traditional sense, but it was decadent anyway.

Then today Jenfu came to have lunch with me, and I insisted that we go to the Floating Sushi restaurant, where you sit at a table and boats full of sushi float past you. As the sushi floats by, you pick up the sushi that you want. You get charged according to the design on the plate. So cute! There was even an opportunity to quote The Office as a plate full of Jello floated by. "I told him once that I don't like jelly. I don't trust the way it moves."

We had delicious sushi and sesame seed balls, and all was going well until we decided to grab some chocolate thing that was floating by. All I can say about that is, should chocolate taste like fish? I'm thinking no.

365 days ago (give or take):

"I want to curl up in a ball and cry and think about the fact that I'll be dead someday. I've been thinking about my own mortality to cheer myself up, because when I'm dead, at least the Republicans can't get me."

Go Howard Dean! Go Howard Dean!

what i'm reading:
Note to self: add Pale Fire and Song of Solomon to the booklist. I think I am starting The Maltese Falcon next. A decision has been made!

what i'm writing:
As announced, I am writing a poem every day through December 9th. Today's poem was about cantaloupe and contains the line "to the nuts!" used in the dirtiest possible way.

See entry!

anything:
The BIA did in fact write to me! All mistletoe hope is not lost.

the birds:
They are sitting on their perches, staring at me.

journal quote of the day:
"Giving a child a book is an implicit act of faith in the child. You when you give a kid a book, you're saying that you believe they have the means within them to understand it, even if at that moment they haven't yet learned the skill."

John Scalzi is supporting a hell of a good cause this Christmas, and you should all go check it out. I can vouch for him; he's a good guy and I promise he won't embezzle your money for nefarious purposes. (Confidential to John: I'm not wrong here, am I? Don't make me look bad, dude.)
