artsy interlude

I went to Portland for 48 hours this weekend; took a ton of pictures and had the greatest time, although I was mostly by myself. But this is not the Portland entry, which is forthcoming. Instead, here are a few random Portland-related expressions of creativity.

Remember the business card story? I was excited to see this on the Holiday Inn counter:

You better believe I dropped my business card in there, even though I have no idea what I could win. It seemed somewhat poetic considering what I wrote in my last entry. There it was, the win-a-prize bowl, sitting on the counter, proving my point. Steak dinner, here I come! (Too bad I don't eat steak.)

This morning on the train, I was reading two of the poetry books I got at Powell's (chapbooks from two of my favorite prose poets, James Tate and Russell Edson) and was inspired to write a poem. It's part of my in-progress collection of prose poems, which is coming together nicely and called lost objects.

The Function of a Thing

The man dropped his business card into the fishbowl, which was sitting beside a sign that read "Drop your Business Card in to Win." There was no indication as to what the prize might be, but the man didn't feel in the least foolish about this. He looked at the cards in the fishbowl, mentally calculating his odds of winning. As he was about to turn away, he saw that his business card had grown fins and gills. It was flopping around and gasping. Hurriedly, he unscrewed his bottle of Evian and poured it into the fishbowl. All the other business cards were ruined, but his swam along, grateful for the near escape. Suddenly a clerk appeared with a plastic bag, into which she scooped some Evian and the man's business card. The card opened and closed its mouth as the clerk extended the baggie towards him. "Sir, you've won!"

And I figured since I was being artsy anyway, I would share some of the photos I took this weekend. I took a lot of photos. In fact, 189 photos. Yay for my gigantic new memory card. It's made me unstoppable.

I like to call this piece of urban art "Pipe Hand."

Speaking of urban art, here is the Sign Series. When I was driving to and through wine country, I kept pulling over to take pictures of signs. Here are my favorites:

"Stepford Hair Salon"

"Pandas Are Delicious"

"Buy Some Slow"

"Lord Teriyaki"

And then there is nature. When you go to a rose garden, have you ever noticed, you end up taking a lot of pictures of roses?

I love orange roses with pink tips.

Also yellow roses with pink tips.

"Arty Roses"

Also, here are my efforts to show how gorgeous Oregon wine country is. I decided my imaginary dream wedding would be on a vineyard. That possibly costs ten million dollars, which is a problem. Also not actually having an upcoming wedding is a problem. But I scoff in the face of these obstacles! Because look...

Come to think of it, this doesn't really show the scope of the endless rolling hills.

This doesn't capture the scope either, but I do like this picture.

Same place, different angle-- more scopeful.

"Farmhouse Fantasy"

Now that is some scopyness!

Thanks for your indulgence with all this. Look for a more substantive entry soon!

365 days ago (give or take):

"One lady said that we have to learn to draw boundaries, because our fat can no longer be an automatic boundary between us and the rest of the world."

About weight-loss.

what i'm reading:
Carter Beats the Devil, for a book club that I have joined! It is great. Better than Kavalier and Clay I thought. And incidentally written by the husband of Alice Sebold, who wrote The Lovely Bones. It's better than that, too.

what i'm writing:
In addition to the poem in the entry, a lot of other prose poems. I'd like to write enough to have a submit-able manuscript, like 50 of them. It might take a while, though.

what i'm watching:
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at the Sacramento French Film Festival. I loved it.

anything:
Today at work has been a HELLISH NIGHTMARE DEVISED BY THE DEVIL TO MAKE ME CRAZY.

oh pointy birds:
They did okay without me while I was on vacation. It's always a relief to come home and find them alive and well.

journal quote of the day:
Have I had time to read journals today? No. No I have not.

mood ring:
peenk

shakespeare says:
"I will stir up in England some black storm shall blow ten thousand souls to heaven or hell." (Henry VI)

escapades update:
Went to Powell's! I will update the list. I want to start linking to entries where I talk about doing the things on the list. I should have thought of that two years ago!
