My Milkshake Brings All The Boys To The Yard

Hey, did you miss me? Well, I'm back!

This article talks about nightclubs that cater to plus-sized patrons, which I think is awesome. "The goal of Abundance Northwest is to ditch the idea that anyone is too fat to go out."

Of course overweight people should be able to go to any club and not feel bad about themselves, but some people just aren't comfortable with the stardard club scene, and this gives those people a place to go and shake their bon bons.

On the one hand its a nice idea. On the other hand, it bothers me a little because its enforcing the attitude that if (note: "if") overweight people don't feel comfortable with themselves in normal situations, the correct thing to do is change the situation.

And then this one quote struck me as odd: "Fifty-five percent of the nation is now above the NIH's standards" for body mass, said Debra Perkins, vice president of the Los Angeles chapter of the NAAFA.Just thrown in there. It really - to me at least - makes it seem as if the NAAFA folk are suggesting that our measurements for healthy weight be dictated by the average weight of society, rather than by medical science. Now, I don't know how the NIH comes up with their numbers, but I'm willing to bet it has at least more to do with health considerations than with "acceptance."

It wouldn't bug me as much if they came out in this article and said that outright. But they're not, presumably because it would be too noticable and too easily disputed. But trying to foster that notion without explicitly saying it - and I've written enough articles to recognize that tactic when I see it - seems a little weak, at least to me.

Wow- I can only imagine the shit a group would get for wanting to gather "thin" people together who felt uncomfortable in clubs because there were too many fat people. If the idea is to "ditch the idea"...- then they should go to regular clubs with the general public as a group, rather than segregate themselves at their private parties.

Anonymous, I agree with you that the idea is a double-edged sword. It seems to me that sometimes we can't live in an ideal world where fat people are confident and feel good about themselves. And how is it different from people who go to gay clubs or fetish clubs? You go where you feel comfortable with the people who are there, to a certain extent.

Those are some good points. The real differences that I see though are that without gay clubs - most of which are very straight-friendly, btw, something I wonder (but don't know) about with the overweight clubs - is that homosexuals were in a situation where going to a "regular" club was often proving to be a real hazard, an activity that could all too often end up in violence. I haven't seen that at all about folk who are overweight in regular clubs.

As for the fetish clubs - well, your average gay club is pretty much the same as your average straight club, except for the clientele. Your average fetish club will be sporting a different kind of activity entirely. I don't really think that it compares in this case.

interesting comments but I would feel more out of "society" and unacceptable if I went to a club only for overweight people. I do not want to identify myself as primarily obese. I have many other attributes. If we look around, most people are overweight, and so what.
