The Diet Novel
First I read this:
“'I decided that it was time to lose the fat and let in the love I was missing,' Kaye explains. 'I wrote The Diet, a story about a woman, Cate, who also found herself overweight, unhappy, unloved and unable to love. I decided that it was time to replace the fat with love,' says Kaye. 'There are so many studies that show how fat can reduce feelings of love for oneself and others and block the warmth of human intimacy we all crave so very much.'”
And I thought wow. This person actually says that if we are fat, we are "unloved." And there are "many studies" that show that if we are fat we don't love people as much. This sounds pretty fucking offensive. And then I read an excerpt from the book and I think I actually burst a blood vessel in my head.
"Cate looked at what was left of her mother. Just cookie crumbs, ice cream stains, an overturned bowl of cold spaghetti, and hundreds of diet books that had toppled from their shelves as her mother clutched at them to break her fall. But they didn’t save her."
That's right! If you are fat, this is how you will die. Unloved, unloveable, and surrounded by cookie crumbs.
Or you can just read this summary of the book:
"She eats and eats. She gains and gains. She loses her husband, her child, her career, and almost her life. She loses everything except her fat!"
Well, doesn't this sound like a delightful, empowering read! Let me pre-order my copy right now!

That is absolutely repulsive. My boyfriend is a struggling writer who can't seem to get a deal and yet THIS makes it to print??? Maybe I should tell him to stop writing about 'real life' and start writing to people's rubbish stereotypes.

If it makes anyone feel better, it looks like it's a self-publishing or a vanity press. I took a look at the publisher, and the only information I could find for them at all was that they may or may not be a member of PMA - Independent Book Publishers of America.

Having read some of the book excerpts, and the little blurb about "meet Cate" and "finding love"....
I'm torn between making parallels with those hilarious "Reefer Madness" scare tactic movies from the 50s...and smashing stuff to relieve my frustration at the stupidity of a world that gave THAT a book deal.
And another thing:"So read The Diet. Enjoy the food. And take the journey with Cate to a life where food and family are love."

Woah... it seems that everybody is piling on the anti-fat bandwagon these days.
Last night I saw the movie "Million Dollar Baby" and was struck by the scene where the heroine tells Clint Eastwood that her brother is in prison, her sister is a welfare fraudster, her father is dead, and her mother "weighs 312 pounds." Honestly, we're now at the point where being overweight is considered as bad as, or even worse than, being a criminal??
Sometimes, you just have to say "bullsh*t."
you guys are funny. first that book is a disgrace. second I think the real problem is that people hate fat so much that when you are very fat no one wants to be around you and they only talk to you out of politness or pity or something.
this can give you a inferiority complex when it seems most people maintain minimal contact with you even people you have known for years when you were alot thinner.
I sometimes don't go to be with them sometimes because for one I don't feel good alot, but also I am self conscious sometimes about my weight, I know I am very fat I can see that every time I look in the mirror. so I try not to look in there very often,
and I noticed that my friends (who have never mistreated me or said anything about my weight) seem to congregate with others who are of similar build and similar age.
I never see them approach a heavy person to strike up a conversation with them, so I think (even if they are unaware of it) that hatred of fat even affects them. but I would guess their actions are unconscious tho because I know them well and they are very loving people.
that is how subtle prejudices can be, sometimes your unaware that you are avoiding people due to these prejudices whatever those prejudices are.
and these movies and shows and books are only adding to the burden of people everywhere fat or thin.
