Two Days Late
With this Christmas-themed article about the profession of Santa Claus being the only one that doesn't discriminate against the overweight.
"75% of more than 1,000 executives surveyed said being overweight impedes careers."
"...employers who offered health insurance paid their obese workers less per hour and gave them lower raises than comparable employees who weren't obese."
"93% of the respondents said they'd prefer a 'normal weight' job candidate over one who's obese, everything else being equal."
Ho ho ho.

I know I've read somewhere that tall people and pretty people get similar advantages. I some employers pay obese employees less because they are offsetting the increased health insurance costs that come with employing an obese person.
What is disturbing is that if they don't offer health insurance, what is the reason? I understand discriminating against smokers - for health insurance reasons and for the constant smoke breaks, but what does weight have to do with doing any job other than supermodel?
Hmm. Well, maybe. But let's rephrase things slightly. You're interviewing two candidates. They are completely equally competent (according to the original question). Which do you hire?
You could flip a coin. Or you could hire the one most "needing" (which is probably illegal in and of itself in the same way that intentionally not hiring the "unwed mother" (or whoever) would be. Or you could pick the one you think would make the best office scenery, by your (right or wrong) standards of attractiveness. Since there is no other business reason, and you need to pick someone, why not go for the pretty person?
I'm just askin'...
