Dress Like A Mermaid. An Ugly Mermaid.

Sometimes I visit plus-size websites and amuse myself by trying to find the best and most horrible item on each site. My vote for most horrible at Fresh Produce goes to this thing, allegedly a dress that lets you “cruise through sunny days and starry nights, in full bloom.” And it passes the "would my mother wear this?" test. (Which is to say, yes, my mother would totally wear it.) Man, I wish I wrote copy for that site.

“This fetching and provocative ensemble will make you feel breezy, cool, stylish, and comfortable. Throw on this all-purpose garment to do projects around the house involving wicker furniture and a Bedazzler, or dress it up with a chunky Home Shopping Club Tanzanite bracelet for a night on the town! Billowy fabric reveals a hint of curve while preserving the mystery of your true shape beneath a soft ocean of cotton. Like a remarkable seashell on the beach, your uniqueness will shine through your every magical step.”

I could go on… but I’ll never approach the perfection of "in full bloom" so I'll spare you. My vote for least horrible goes to the ensemble currently gracing the front page. It's cute! It's got potential! And the website has a cute design, too. It's too bad about the clothes being mostly hideous. Perhaps appliques are the answer.

You know what they say about preparation meeting opportunity, Mo. Put in a bid for copywriter for the site. Who knows? Maybe the pay's good.

You forgot the first line from that hideous slip-cover: "Put on a little romance..." Not that I'm saying that nobody would find that outfit romatic but, well, yeah, actually I guess I am saying that.

Am I the only one who thinks "Fresh Produce" is a bad name for a clothing store? It sounds like they want to wrap me in lettuce.

You are good. With your description I might even be tempted to by the "sack dress from hell"

As gross as that dress is...and you are right, it IS disgusting... that Fresh Produce site is pretty cute. Adorable looks. Bizarre name, to be sure, but cute clothes.

I agree with the "worst" outfit. It looks like something I'd wear to bed...certainly not out in public. I'm pretty sure that the woman modeling it looks much bigger than she actually is when she wears it.

Okay GBgirl, I'm gonna need some examples of cute stuff at that site. I'm seeing nothing.

That's a dress? Not a nightie? It looks like a mighy comfy nightie to me.

I think the mid-knee length version is worse, looks even more like a nightie.

That sight is getting worse by the moment, I just noticed the tag line at the top: "with a smidge more room". EEEEEK.

If I were a nightgown and not a pajama person, I might spend $10 to wear this thing to bed. It does look comfy. However there's no way I'd spend $58 and wear it out and about.

Oh my god, it costs FIFTY-EIGHT BUCKS? I missed that part. WOW.

That, as my dear old mom used to say, is a SCHMATTE! (Yiddish for rag)

They should just call it a moo-moo and be done with it. Gosh, is that how you spell moo-moo??? Hmm...

Actually, I always thought it was mu-mu...but moo-moo is strangely more appropriate and probably what the makers of that dress were thinking.

That dress is horrible.

As for the name of the store - maybe they think they'll get more fat people if they name it after a food? Of course, something like Delicious Chocolate would have been better than Fresh Produce. (ohh, I think I just came up with a good name for a store that sells big lady lingerie!) :)

K.C., it's spelt "muu-muu." It's Hawaiian, and I believe the actual translation is, "Look what those missionaries have done to us now! This is even worse than their STDs!!"

Speaking as a wearer thereof, it is perfectly possible for knit cotton dresses to be appealing and flattering. This one? Isn't.

Ah, I see I wasn't the only one who instantly recognised it as a nightshirt. Or even just a GIANT t-shirt.

And Heather's right - the model looks much slimmer in your "best" outfit.

OK, upon detailed review, I think I just like the template of the site, and not the clothes.

I was pretty shocked that the ugly dress cost $58 as well. Pity the poor women who buy it...

Holy crap, you guys. I looked at some of the other offerings. I think the Needlepoint Flower Short Sleeve Dress is at least equally hideous as the ugly mermaid.

The needlepoint dress is quite hideous. I do love their description though:

"This year, walk on the beach with confidence in this 100% cotton jersey cover-up dress. Let the beach towel be your runway and the breaking waves be your cheering fans."

The waves will be my cheering fans? Go muu-muu, go!

Mo, I don't know if you even see comments from older posts, but I just sort of accidentally discovered that "Fresh Produce" is primarily a non-plus sized company; I guess "Extra Fresh Produce" is the plus sized line.

But the clothes are equally horrifying in all sizes. I just bought a poorly-photographed dress from an online retailer, thinking it would be a basic shift dress that might be nice for hot days, but dude, it's a muu-muu. It's a size 8 muu-muu. And the fabric is 1975 shower curtain.

Anyway, my vote for most horrible plus-size catalog is this one. Some of the outfits they made those models wear, as well as some of the hairstyles, made me want to cry. (See this poor lady, for example. I just want to hug her and buy her a haircut.)

Hee, 1975 shower curtain! I applaud that site for using plus-sized models, but.... yeah. That's.... unfortunate.
