Week One

I lost 2.0 pounds this week, and I have to confess that I'm disappointed. I was "good" this week... angelically "good" in fact. I ate all my flex points on one day (Sunday) and spent the rest of the week either exactly on points or a couple of points under. Another girl who was doing her first week weigh-in lost 6.6 pounds. I mean, I'd be happy with a 2 pound average, any other week 2 pounder would be great, but on your first week, don't you get all that magical water weight loss, and all that? I was hoping for a kick-start.

Maybe I didn't drink enough water.

Well, I clearly haven't been doing anything wrong, so I am going to continue my strategy. Tomorrow before work I will go to the grocery store and get my light bread, my light yogurt, my sugar snap peas, my bananas, my Healthy Choice deli meat, etc. I guess if I lost 2 pounds a week, I would get under 200 pounds within six months, so I really shouldn't complain. I just really want to lose ten pounds before I go back to Coldington next month.

Which is, let's face it, utterly unrealistic.

My first week back to Weight Watchers this month I lost .2 pounds. .2! Because I am a camel who refuses to lose her water weight, apparently.

My first week back on the weight loss wagon (of which there have been far too many first weeks), almost always is disappointing. But I usually show a significant loss on the second week, kind of like when you start a new job and there is a week lag in payroll.

i think 2lbs is amazing. i have to be a goddamned saint to lose 2lbs. i think walking on water would be easier than losing 5-10lbs. i have been losing the same 5-10lbs for the past 5 years. i never get there. so hang in there - it will come. if you have a little more weight to lose, hopefully some of it is because of bad habits that can be broken and give you an instant few pounds off. the hard part comes later when there is nothing left to give up. agH!

anyway, the whole weight loss thing depresses me but i admire you doing it for the right reasons (i.e. health, cholesterol, etc) rather than the retarded cultural ones. hell, i even diet so i can find clothes that bloody fit - once you are above size 4 nothing fits anyone who has an ass or hips!! sorry i am venting. i will be encouraging from now on! you are not alone! go forth and conquer! keep up the great blogging, which i need to catch up and read...

Terri: I am below a size 4 (in most brands--one problem with small sizes is the incredibly broad variation between brands), and I can't get anything that fits my hips because I don't really have any (I get that from my mother). Women's clothes are bad all over. :p

A few recommendations for getting the most out of calorie control:

1) Don't skimp on breakfast. In particular, get a healthy portion of fat in your breakfast to let your metabolism know it's time to get to work.

2) Do strength-training. Muscle mass eats calories.

3) Get lots of fiber, which will help you feel full on fewer calories and may also even block some fat absorption (this seems questionable, but it's definitely still good for you).

And seriously, take a look at SparkPeople.com--it's free and their diet plan, when giving you a daily calorie range, will take into account your exercise regime. I burn 3000+ a week with gym stuff and brisk walking, and when I told SP that, it ramped up my daily calorie range by about 300 calories (by default, it has some kind of estimate based on how many days a week you say you want to do cardio).

Two pounds is really good, Mo. Slow and steady is the best way to lose weight. Or so my trainer tells me.
