Irony
So, the New York Times article I linked to in yesterday's post said "Three years ago, Jennifer Hudson’s best-known fashion statement was a pantsuit that Simon Cowell, the resident acerbic of “American Idol,” compared to a roll of aluminum foil." Of course, as Ian pointed out, it was ironic when she showed up on the red carpet wearing a jacket made of aluminum foil.
But hey, at least she wasn't dressed like an AIDS ribbon. And she looked awesome in her sing-off with Beyonce--that red dress was smokin'.
Also, raise your hand if you think Norbit was the reason Eddie Murphy lost his Oscar last night. I completely believe that.
"Leading up to the Oscars, some speculated that the recent release of Murphy's lowbrow, cross-dressing comedy 'Norbit' would injure his Oscar prospects. The 'Norbit' producers hesitated over releasing it in the middle of Murphy's Oscar campaign, but director Brian Robbins said it was Murphy who insisted on releasing it on schedule."
I thought he deserved the Oscar, but part of me was happy he didn't win it. Up yours, Norbit.

Karma, dude. Look it up in Websters.
Personally, I had no idea why DreamGirls got such rave reviews so am not all that surprised that EMurphy didn't win.
Am I the only fattie who wasn't offended by the concept of Norbert?!?!
The reason Dreamgirls got such rave reviews, is we live in a reverse racist society. It's great Jennifer Hudson won, but I'm sure a part of her winning was that she was Black.
I think Abigail Breslin should've won, she could've acted circles around Jennifer. You know, though, the Oscars don't want to hear people crying about racism, so they have to give out awards to some Black people, talent or not.
I don't mean to sound racist, but few people are willing to recognize the problem of reverse-racism in our country.
I am sorry for what happened with slavery, but I don't see where that allows for Black people to do exactly the same things, that Whites did to them in the past. I don't see the dignity in lowering yourself, to behaving in the same manner of those who have wronged you before.
I am surprised Eddie Murphy didn't win. However, if he wanted that Oscar. He would've kept his sizeist bomb of a "movie" on the shelf, or heck, just do away with the idea altogether.
I heard Eddie talking before the Oscars about how he though The Nutty Professor, was one of his best acting roles. How it was somehow profound how he played all those characters. It was no accomplishment, he was playing characters who all were of the same stereotype. It's no different than playing the same character.
I think Eddie Murphy is sick, if he really thinks putting on a fat suit and belittling those who are of size, is something to be proud of. The reality is he thinks that 5 year old bully humour is funny. I guess now he knows people think it's not. The fact is he's spent long enough playing out humour, which would be cute for a 10 year old, but not an adult. Of course, this was allowed because he was Black. Certianly nobody would put up with this from a white person.
Jackie, I am confused. Are you trying to be provocative? On the chance that you are not, I'll note that Gwyneth Paltrow "got away with" putting on a fat suit. I too thought Abigail Breslin was wonderful, but I don't know who deserved to win, since I didn't see all the nominated performances. I do think many people win who perhaps didn't deserve to win (Julia Roberts for Erin Brokovich, Mel Gibson for Braveheart still floors me). There are many reasons for this, including buzz, which Jennifer Hudson has. Not everything is race-based. If that is what you'd like to discuss, however, you may want to try a different site, since BFD is devoted to issues of body weight and image.
Thanks for your post, Jelly--I also agree that "reverse racism" is a ridiculous charge. Then again, this is also the year Beyonce's father accused the Academy of being "racist" for not nominating his daughter. I agree that J. Hud won fair and square.
In other news, Eddie Murphy apparently stormed out of the Academy Award ceremony when he lost, and didn't watch J. Hud win her award or the Dreamgirls song performance. So he's a sore loser, an asshole (with the Sporty Spice situation), and a maker of hateful films. Alrighty then. Good to know.
Weren't Murphy's fifteen minutes up about two minutes after he left SNL? I mean, wtf? Whoever keeps going to see his movies must be stopped.
I only recently learned that the Acadamy Award nominees have to campaign for the votes that will determine who will win. In other words, it has very little to do with how good you are.
Jelly....I see your point about Gwyneth not getting the amount of backlash for Shallow Hal that Eddie Murphy is getting for Norbert. For me personally, however, I think Shallow Hal was at least attempting to show that appearance has nothing whatsoever to do what a person is really like. Hal came around at the end and was in love with the woman, no matter the size.
I haven't seen Norbert, but from what I read, the entire plot is about Norbert trying to keep as far away from the fat chick as possible, so he can pursue the "ideal" (ie: thin) woman. But they don't "redeem" him by having him realize that the fat one is just as nice (or nicer) than the hot one.
If that is an accurate description of the movie, then I can see why Murphy is getting far more backlash than Gwyneth.
"I thought he deserved the Oscar, but part of me was happy he didn't win it. Up yours, Norbit."
*shrieking helpless laughter*
Methinks Jackie's having a temporary synaptic lapse. Give her some tea with stevia. And a gag.
