Huffing (also see: Puffing)

You may think that since I haven't said anything about it, I quit going to the gym. Well, that is untrue! In fact, I am on my fourth week of my MWF schedule and have not missed a day. (If I don't make it on one day due to social commitments, I go the next day.)

If I at home bored, and can't think of anything to do, it actually occurs to me to go to the gym. Last night I didn't feel like watching television; I felt like going to the gym. (I only made it 20 minutes, because it turns out I was pretty wiped out, but at least I made it.) I have mostly been doing 30-minute workouts. What's the next step, do you think--more days per week, or more minutes? It's an interesting conundrum.

I have found that the heart rate monitors on the machines vary wildly, and I need to buy my own, I think, just for consistency's sake. Shannonk tells me that you strap the monitors to your chest and they make tiny communications with a watch you wear. Strapping on a thing on my chest, however, smacks of effort. Sometimes it seems like a lot of effort just to change my shoes. So I am skeptical. We'll see.

Oh, and our podcast topic for this week was exercise. I don't remember what I said, but I bet I said something!

Yep, you definitely need to get your own heart monitor - because you can program it with your own stats it will give you a far more accurate reading than the machines at the gym which are calibrated for the "average" user (whoever that is). Plus, each machine is probably calibrated differently.

And I thouht I was the only one who found strapping on the chest thingy a chore! But it works; when I can't be bothered to use my HRM I tend to slack off. But when I'm using it, I'm working hard to keep those numbers high!

I've been working out with my HRM since I bought it in January; since then my resting heart rate has dropped from 69 to 66.

Another tip: You can smear some water-based personal lubricant (really!) on the inside of the chest unit. This helps the electrodes to better pick up your heart rate.

YAY for you!
i've been going to the gym 1 time a week. which is weak but its better than zero times I reason. plus i've been moving a lot more due to having to take the new puppy out frequently. granted its not super aerobic but again its more calories than i burned just sitting, right?

Go girl!!

way to go with the gym workouts!

about the heart monitor thingy, I find those things incredibly annoying and cannot keep one on for an entire workout. just my two cents!

I give you credit. I find it so hard to stick to a regular gym schedule. Now that it's summertime, I've been exercising a lot outside. I feel like my gym membership is going to waste, but I know I'll go back once the weather gets colder.
