Health News

I went to the doctor today for a physical, and I am officially healthier than I was last year. My cholesterol has gone from 207 (borderline) to 184 (normal) with a corresponding downward shift in my "bad" cholesterol. My "good" cholesterol (HDL I guess) is still the same, and is 44 when they want it at 50 or above. Not sure how to raise good cholesterol, but I'm sure some of you good people will be able to tell me.

My cholesterol has been borderline (in the 200 range) for a long time now, and it's incredibly gratifying to see it down at 184. I've lost 7 pounds over that same period, but most of that was in the last two weeks. Anyway, that's a 25-point lowering of my cholesterol, and that is a number really worth focusing on. WOO!

I have the HDL issue too, and my doctor said more nuts, fish, avocados and olive oil will help raise it. Or fish oil caplets, but I refuse to take those; I'd rather eat nuts and guacamole.

Completely off the cholesterol topic: Congrats on the shout-out in Bust ;)

On-topic: some fats (olive oil, peanut butter) can raise HDL. I've heard that a drink or two a day can as well. Sure there's exercise and fiber but fat & booze is far more fun.

Red wine and exercise are great for HDL. And tasty, tasty nuts.

That's great new to hear your cholesterol is down! One of the most difficult parts about dieting and living healthy is trying to find what works best for you. Glad to hear your on your way to success! This New Years, I want to read Dr. Dean Ornish's new book the "Spectrum". He provides you tools to customize a way of eating, managing stress, and exercising that is based on your own desires, needs, and genetic predispositions. Hopefully this will help me figure out what's best for me... Here's a link to an interesting discussion about it: http://www.wellsphere.com/viewGroup.s?id=110918

Despite what you may have heard, losing weight isn’t a incomprehensible process. In fact, weight loss doesn't even have to include odd diets, uncommon exercises or even the use of medication or fitness equipment. So what is the secret to losing weight effectively? Simply make minor changes each and every single day and you'll slowly but surely lose extra unwanted weight, pound by pound.

Secrets to Weight Loss

To lose a sinlge pound, you must burn approximately 3500 calories above what you already burn while conducting daily activities. That sounds impossible doesn't it?

Well, it’s not. Here's how simple it is.

1. Calculate your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). Your BMR is what your body needs to maintain normal functions like breathing and digestion.

2. Calculate your activity level. Use a calorie calculator to figure out how many calories you burn while doing various things like sitting, standing, exercising, etc. throughout the day.

3. Closely monitor of how many calories you eat. Use a food journal to add up what you eat and drink each and every single day. If you're eating less calories than you're burning, you will lose weight.

Focusing your attention on daily changes is the best way to reach your weight loss goals. Don’t expect to lose weight overnight. Instead expect to lose weight gradually over time. To lose weight gradually over time, is to lose weight the healthy way. When attempting to lose weight it’s important that you always remember, your Health is more important than your Appearance!
