“It’s like a crashing… crashing… crashing. That’s not a good noise. If it was a GOOD noise, we’d hear it all the time! We’d hear it ALL OVER THE WORLD! But we DON’T! DO WE?!?”
~ The Crazy Dog Lady,“Do you have some kind of problem with your head?”
complaining about some noise Pierre was making, erasing tapes~ Pierre’s responseThe Crazy Dog Lady drama continues. We’re on day three now. She has spent the past three days muttering comments and expletives under her breath, withholding information from me, giving me dirty looks, and trying to engage other staff members in a subtle power struggle against me. I’m in the stage where her actions are so disgusting that it’s funny. When I think about what started this (“Hey, CDL, I noticed a small error here…”) it’s doubly funny. This woman is just. Not. Normal.
I made an offhand comment this morning that has sent her into Maritza’s office for, I kid you not, an hour. And I didn’t even address the comment to her! Yes, I’m that good.
Another person and I were having a conversation that included lots of knowing looks—we knew we were irritating her just by speaking. I made some comment about doing “this crappy job,” meaning the job of entering the time that she and I both share. It is certainly a crappy job, but the Crazy Dog Lady takes it so seriously, you’d think lives were at stake. She’s constantly issuing memos to everyone involved, trying to get them to do everything her way… down to the last dot on the i and cross on the t. I knew that belittling the job that is so near and dear to her heart would be a sure fire way of getting to her. I tried to affect a real “this job is beneath me” aura, knowing it would piss her off. Mission accomplished!
According to my company spy, she later said to Maritza, “I can’t believe people complain about their jobs. I mean, I am so nice. I try to be so nice to people and do my part, and make everything pleasant, and I just don’t understand…” Maritza may even be taken in by this to a certain extent, since she described the CDL as a “nice person” this morning. Yeah, right. If a vindictive, jealous, petty, manipulative bitch with a victim complex can be described as “nice”, I’ll be the first to agree with that statement.
Oh, and you don’t have to burst my bubble by pointing out my own petty vindictiveness in this situation. She deserves it, and therefore I embrace my hypocrisy. Thank you. Drive through.
Katie and I met up yesterday and exchanged pictures. Although we were on each other’s nerves hardcore by the end of our vacation, we were able to laugh about everything yesterday… such as almost missing the boat in Athens, or fending off the Turkish guy who tried to grope us in Istanbul. I guess in spite of everything, the trip really did bring us closer together.
She’s depressed now, I discovered. Her B.A. is in classical archaeology, and when she got married and her husband took over the family landscaping business, she gave up a chance to get a masters in archaeology from the University of Istanbul. It’s a real Sliding Doors thing for her… the road not taken.
Now that I’ve been on this trip, I sort of understand how she must feel. We went to about a zillion archaeological sites, and it’s astounding how much is left to be discovered. For instance in Ephesus, only 20% of the city’s ruins have been unearthed. I can only imagine what it’s like to excavate a city that ancient, with that kind of historical importance. I guess I’m naïve, because I had no idea that classical archeology was still so relevant today.
As I said, we also exchanged copies of our pictures. She had a fancy Pentax camera, but my pictures came out about seventy billion times better than hers did. My Olympus just did a much better job. Part of it was the UV lens I bought before I left; I’m really congratulating myself on that one. The lens really brings out the colors in the pictures, and I got some sunset sailboat shots that came out nicely. I also seem to know a little something about finding a subject and framing a shot. Who knew! I’m quite pleased with both the camera and myself.
On the flip side, I wish I had known beforehand that my pictures would turn out so much better than hers. Unfortunately, I only took a couple of pictures in Athens before my battery ran out. I took a nice one of the Temple of Hephaistus with her camera, but my camera would have done an amazing job with the light. So we have some decent pictures in Athens, but not the great ones we could have had. There are also some other shots (like the one of the whirlpools) that I should have trusted to my camera alone. Ah well.
I have been incredibly busy this week—so busy that I haven’t even had a chance to talk to my best friend Tim since I’ve been home. And what have I been busy with? Other than going out with Katie yesterday, Matt and I went to see Mission: Impossible 2 on Tuesday.
It’s worlds better than the first one, despite the fact that it’s one of the most predictable films I’ve ever seen. As soon as the premise is set up, which revolves around a deadly virus with a convenient built-in time limit for the antidote, you know exactly which character is going to get infected and how it’s all going to end. (Speaking of which, anyone who understands why they couldn’t just kill the person and get the virus out of their bloodstream should write and explain it to me, because I don’t get it.)
But I digress. M:I 2 is a great popcorn movie. It’s one of those “you get what you pay for” kind of films where your expectations are met, and satisfyingly so, but not exceeded. And of course, anyone who’s seen Face/Off would know instantly that John Woo directed it. What’s with this guy and pigeons?
If you think you’d like it, I bet you will. I’d rather watch this than the dreck the 007 franchise is churning out these days, that’s for sure.
Grade: B
I see that the winners are in for the diarist.net awards. I have now increased my successful prediction percentage to 71%… I thought I was doomed to 60% forever. Nobody wrote to tell me I had swayed their votes this quarter, but I must be more influential than I thought, because the people I endorsed seem to have, by and large, won. So in addition to kissing Kymm’s ass (I was so right about that, by the way) you should probably kiss mine. And here’s a hint: Dan’s Chocolates are the way to go. Dear god, are those things incredible or what?
